Action
It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and

destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy

losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their

professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand

and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

Drama
Bruno Stroszek is released from prison and warned to stop drinking. He has few skills and fewer expectations: with a

glockenspiel and an accordion, he ekes out a living as a street musician. He befriends Eva, a prostitute down on her

luck. After they are harried and beaten by the thugs who have been Eva's pimps, they join Bruno's neighbor, Scheitz, an

elderly eccentric, when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin. In that winter bound, barren prairie, Bruno works as a

mechanic, Eva as a waitress. They buy a trailer. Then, bills mount, the bank threatens to repossess the trailer, Eva

wants privacy, and inexorably, the promise of a new life deserts Bruno.

Ten years after the war, West Germany's market economy is booming. Into an unnamed city that's rife with corruption

comes a new building commissioner, Herr von Bohm, committed to progress but also upright. He's smitten by Marie-Louise,

a single mother who's his landlady's daughter. Von Bohm does not realize she is also Lola, a singer at a bordello and

the mistress of Schuckert, a local builder whose profits depend on von Bohm's projects. When von Bohm discovers Marie-

Louise's real vocation and looks closely at Schuckert's work, will this social satire play out as a remake of "Blue

Angel," a visit of Chekhov to West Germany, or an update of Jean Renoir's "Rules of the Game"?

Biography
In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with the Russian Army closing in from the east and the Allied

Expeditionary Force attacking from the west. In Berlin, capital of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany

will still achieve victory and orders his Generals and advisers to fight to the last man. "Downfall" explores these

final days of the Reich, where senior German leaders (such as Himmler and Goring) began defecting from their beloved

Fuhrer, in an effort to save their own lives, while still others (Joseph Goebbels) pledge to die with Hitler. Hitler,

himself, degenerates into a paranoid shell of a man, full of optimism one moment and suicidal depression the next. When

the end finally does comes, and Hitler lies dead by his own hand, what is left of his military must find a way to end

the killing that is the Battle of Berlin, and lay down their arms in surrender.

Nejat seems disapproving about his widower father Ali's choice of prostitute Yeter for a live-in girlfriend. But he

grows fond of her when he discovers she sends money home to Turkey for her daughter's university studies. Yeter's

sudden death distances father and son. Nejat travels to Istanbul to search for Yeter's daughter Ayten. Political

activist Ayten has fled the Turkish police and is already in Germany. She is befriended by a young woman, Lotte, who

invites rebellious Ayten to stay in her home, a gesture not particularly pleasing to her conservative mother Susanne.

When Ayten is arrested and her asylum plea is denied, she is deported and imprisoned in Turkey. Lotte travels to

Turkey,where she gets caught up in the seemingly hopeless situation of freeing Ayten.

During the Second World War, a small group of students at Munich University begin to question the decesions and sanity

of Germany's Nazi government. The students form a resistance cell which they name the "White Rose" after a newsletter

that is secretly distributed to the student body. At first small in numbers and fearful of discovery, the White Rose

begins to gain massive support after a Nazi Gauleiter nearly incites a student riot after a provokative speech. At this

point, the matter is taken over by the German Gestapo, who pledge to hunt down and destroy the members of the White

Rose.

Karl and Richard, two German soldiers captured by the Russians in World War I, become very close friends-so close that

Richard shares intimate stories about his wife, Anna. Through these stories, Karl falls in love with her in his

thoughts. When Karl escapes and goes to Richard's home, Anna knows he is not her husband. But although she tries to

resist Karl's love, she feels a growing response to him. Then, one day, Richard returns... This beautifully shot work

was the only East German film ever to win the Golden Bear at the West German Berlin International Film Festival.

Shortly after this success, however, the film's distribution was suspended due to problems with the literary rights.

After over 20 years, the film is now finally available again.
